The charity is named after Edith Cavell, who served as a nurse in the First World War and is celebrated for saving numerous lives and helping over 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium. In 1917, The Daily Telegraph and The Mirror newspapers launched a national appeal in her memory, intending to raise funds for nurses “shattered mentally and physically, who have sought the health of others at the expense of their own.” This fund was the beginning of Cavell as it is today.
“At Huntleigh, everything we do is rooted in supporting the people who care for others,” commented Darren Meilak, Global Head of Marketing for Huntleigh. “We work closely with nurses and midwives every day and see first‑hand the pressures they face. Cavell plays a crucial role in supporting these professionals when life becomes difficult, which is why supporting Cavell is so important to us.”
To start the partnership off, the Huntleigh team attending the Conference of the European Wound Management Association will be joining Cavell’s ‘Purple Walk’, aiming to walk 15,000 steps on the 6th of May, representative of the 15,000 steps a nurse might take during a 12-hour shift.
Libby Rowlands, Head of Partnerships at Cavell said, “We’re thrilled to be working with the team at Huntleigh Healthcare! Participating in Cavell’s Purple Walk is a brilliant way for the team to kick start our partnership. Huntleigh’s commitment to fundraising for us will make a meaningful impact for the midwives and nurses who come to Cavell in crisis.”
